The Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO) and German life sciences group Bayer signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding during the state visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany.

According to the Abu Dhabi Media Office, the agreement creates a framework for the two sides to explore work across health and life sciences, food security, philanthropy and innovation ecosystems in the emirate.

State news agency WAM said the MoU establishes a basis for joint exploration rather than a fixed capital commitment: specific projects, research programmes and any local presence are to be identified from here.

The agri-food side is the part with the clearest UAE angle. Bayer's crop science business works on seed and protection systems for hot, low-water growing conditions, which is exactly the constraint on Abu Dhabi's domestic food production and on its aim of reducing import dependence.

For the local ecosystem the agreement signals where ADIO is pointing investor attention next: life sciences and controlled-environment agriculture, alongside the industrial and energy deals signed the same week.
